Rhodes University was established in 1904 and is a small residential, contact, research-intensive university located in the Eastern Cape Province, outside a major urban area and away from major distractions. This offers a unique opportunity for students and staff to focus and excel in their academic pursuit. At Rhodes University, every student is a person with a name and a face, and not just a number. Our student to staff ratio is between 1:14 and 1:16.
At Rhodes University, students are not taught what to think, but how to think imaginatively, creatively and innovatively. Students are permitted to have a maximum choice of undergraduate major subjects and to graduate with combinations that are of special interest to them. Students can graduate with double or triple majors.
Rhodes University is one of the best research-intensive institutions in South Africa. We have leaders in, among other fields, medicinal chemistry and nanotechnology, water research, physics and radio astronomy techniques, biotechnology innovation, global change, and environmental sustainability. Rhodes University contributes enormously to research on teaching and learning and its academics draw on research to inform their pedagogical practice.
It is for a good reason that Rhodes University’s slogan is ‘Where Leaders Learn’.
The University develops not just leaders, but ethical and transformative leaders, the kind of leaders that our country and the world need.
