PADI Diving Courses
Coral Divers Private College and Dive Resort, is situated within the boundaries of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Sodwana Bay. The Coral Divers resort provides a warm and friendly atmosphere offering various accommodation options, as well as a well-run and professional PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre. We are extremely fortunate to be situated inside the beauty of the actual park (the oldest of only 2 private facilities here) and conveniently close to the vast array of unspoilt tropical coral reefs of the Sodwana Bay Marine Reserve. The reefs are populated with a huge diversity of Indo-Pacific fish & invertebrates and receive regular visitors like Manta Rays, Whale Sharks and Humpback Whales. The beaches are one of the few places in the world where the Loggerhead Turtles and giant Leatherback Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. They visit us every November to January for this, and the evening turtle tours are a fantastic way to experience this incredible sight.
Apart from the resort, Coral Divers has been training PADI Dive Instructors since 1996. The program has evolved over time, into the forming of a private college that offers professional PADI tuition to those individuals who wish to pursue a career in diving, or as a stepping stone into related careers such as Marine Biology and Tourism, or even the exciting world of Sailing. Since the PADI OWSI qualification is internationally recognised, it is an excellent means to finding work all over the world. Our candidates have found employment in many exotic locations and used this widely recognised qualification, to start off their careers. PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) is the world’s leading diver accreditation agency and certifies over 80% of the world’s divers.

We have four intakes per year, which start annually on the 1st Feb, 1st May, 1st Aug, and 1st November. These are the start dates for the Introductory Phase and Divemaster Phase. The full program is a total of 7 months of training, with the option of being selected to extend this to a year, at no extra cost once you are a qualified instructor. This comes about by being selected on merit as one of the instructors asked to stay on, once the training program is completed. All meals, accommodation and branded clothing are provided.
The training is broken up into phases as follows:
Introduction phase (3 Months) – (Please consider this if you do not have any, or only a few dives logged – i.e. 0 – 30 dives)
During this phase you will complete your PADI Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue and Emergency First Responder (first aid). These are your key courses. You will also complete you the PADI Deep Diver and Enriched Air Diver Specialties. We will deduct the Padi registration fee for any courses you already hold.
PADI Naturalist and Fish Identification Specialty courses and navigation skills are also taught. There are a total of 7 ‘official’ courses in this phase, designed to give you a solid foundation of experience before going Pro.
Divemaster Phase (1 month) – (You would start here if you are already a Rescue Diver with +50 dives)
This is the first step as a PADI Professional, so students will learn the knowledge to be able to answer any questions, learn skills to demonstrate and help others. Mapping skills and practicing presentations to deliver an excellent dive briefing are taught as well. Divemasters can also assist on training courses, providing valuable assistance.
Divemaster Experience Phase (2,5-3 months)
In the Divemaster Experience Phase, you will build up your experience leading dives and assisting on courses. Learn more about resort operations by assisting in the gear room and for special events. During this time, you will also take the extensive Instructor Preparation Course to ensure you are fully prepared for what lies ahead.
Instructor Course (2 weeks)
Discover what it takes to teach others and introduce them to the world of diving. This is a 14-day course conducted by our in-house Course Director, starting midway through the last month of the DM Experience Phase. This process finishes with a 2-day exam conducted by a PADI Independent Examiner.
The diving here, is spectacular and offers many dive sites to suit all experience levels and interests. Warm water means almost year-round diving (364 days as we do not operate on New Year’s Day) and an average water temperature range of 22°C in winter to 28°C in summer. Dive sites range from 8 – 40m and there are over 30 sites to choose from. Visibility (how far you can see underwater) ranges from 10m to 20m+ and there is normally a slight north south current which makes drift diving easy. It also means that Sodwana attracts divers from all over SA and internationally, as it truly is South Africa’s best area for scuba diving.
The resort is large and busy, offering our interns fantastic hands-on experience as they learn the Dive Industry. We provide guests with all levels of PADI scuba instruction, giving our new instructors a chance at gaining valuable experience. With on-site classroom facilities and two heated, dedicated dive pools for training purposes, the Dive Center is well-run and efficient.
The Coral Divers Private College provides a well-rounded and comprehensive program, where candidates join us to learn the Dive Industry and go from having no diving qualification to PADI Open Water Instructor, Master Scuba Diver Trainer or even further to PADI Staff Instructor. All meals and accommodation are provided, together with the mentorship of the highly experienced Dive Instructors on our staff. The number of dives done per candidate, is unlimited, with candidates encouraged to dive as much as possible to gain proper experience.
